Attorney General Says ISO Explanation Of Almost $86 Million In Payments To Generators Who Delivered No Power Raises More Questions Than Answers

April 21, 2009

"ISO-New England's so-called 'explanation' is incomprehensible, almost incoherent, certainly raising more questions than it answers and making an investigation all the more necessary. For nearly two weeks, ISO ignored growing questions about this scam, only to issue this bizarre, confusing statement about nearly $86 million squandered on generators that failed to deliver power. Instead of clarifying, ISO further confused.

"ISO's double-talk -- puzzling, perplexing mumbo jumbo -- makes me even more determined to pursue my antitrust investigation of ISO-New England and generators. I will fight for facts and refunds in this apparent $86 million con -- a return of every penny improperly paid.

"ISO's changing story is an apparent and appalling attempt to sweep this scandal under the rug, avoiding accountability and scrutiny. Apparent withdrawal of statements and conclusions publicly presented to FERC is deeply troubling, raising fresh concerns about the grid operator's competence and credibility -- especially of its Internal Market Monitoring Unit, which is vital to regional power markets."
