Authorized lienholders and contracted Electric Lien and Title service providers can find out the lien status of a vehicle or vessel

A lien refers to a legal claim against property that can be used as collateral to repay a debt. In this case, it refers to a claim against a vehicle or vessel (i.e., boats and other water vessels) that gives your lienholder—security interest—right to the item until you’ve paid the debt in full and own it outright.

 

To find out if there’s a lien against your vehicle or vessel, you can submit an inquiry online for free.

How to become an authorized user

How can a lienholder or a contracted Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) service provider gain access to the lien status inquiry?

For access to the lien status inquiry site, you need an approved authorized user agreement on file with the CT DMV. Send your completed user agreements to DMV.Title@ct.gov. Once approved you will receive your username via email from Connecticut Interactive LLC.

 

Who’s authorized to use the lien status inquiry?

A CT DMV-approved authorized lienholder or their contracted ELT service provider. Note: As a prerequisite for a contracted ELT service provider to use the lien inquiry, their primary lienholder must first have an approved authorized user agreement on file with the CT DMV.

How current is the data?

The vehicle system data for lienholder status inquiry is updated every 48 hours.

I’m having problems logging in, who should I contact?

I keep receiving error messages. What’s going on?

Please verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)/Hull Identification Number (HIN) being entered is correct and try again. If you continue to receive an error message, please contact the CT DMV at DMV.Title@ct.gov for additional assistance.

The data being displayed appears to be incorrect. How can I fix it?

Do user account passwords expire?

Yes. User account passwords are good for 90 days, at which point a new password is required. You’ll start receiving password reset email notifications 14 days prior to expiration.

How can I disable my user account?

Send your request to disable your user account to the CT DMV at DMV.Title@ct.gov. Be sure to include your username, your email address, and the name of the lienholder and/or the contracted ELT service provider.
