Description of Lesson

This lesson plan for Grades K-2 titled “Action ABC’s:  Learning Vocabulary with Verbs” from readwritethink.org has an estimated ELA/Literacy instructional time of at least four 45-minute sessions. The emphasis of this lesson is for students to: gain or review knowledge of parts of speech, access and expand their existing vocabulary, and apply their vocabulary knowledge of parts of speech in order to create and illustrate a book.

Cautions

Connecticut teachers should be cautioned that the formative and summative assessments that are included in these lessons are not fully developed to address all of the standards listed and do not include CCSS aligned scoring rubrics.

Rationale for Selection

The lesson plan is a good example of how to integrate targeted instruction in grammar and conventions through a progression of learning where concepts and skills advance and deepen over time. The lessons focus on building students’ academic vocabulary in context throughout instruction.
