LT. GOVERNOR BYSIEWICZ STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT DECISION ALLOWING BUSINESSES TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST LGBTQ+ CUSTOMERS

6/30/2023

(HARTFORD, CT) - Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ+ customers, siding with a Colorado web designer that refused to build wedding websites for LGBTQ+ couples.

“On the last day of Pride Month, it’s deeply disturbing to watch the U.S. Supreme Court again move our nations backwards and target the rights of our already vulnerable LGBTQ+ population. The nation’s highest court protecting a business owner’sability to refuse the right to service simply based upon who someone loves is devastating – and it has the potential to open the floodgates of complaints from businesses across the nation looking to discriminate against all categories of customers.

I've been proud to spend the last month visiting pride celebrations and highlighting LGBTQ+ businesses and organizations across the state. In Connecticut, we remain proud of our laws protecting the LGBTQ+ community and will fight to ensure that those rights continue to be protected.”
