TROOPERS MAKE ARRESTS IN NORFOLK ARSON CASES
On 12/17/2011, at approximately 11:25 p.m., State Police at Troop B received a call of a residential structure fire at 292 Wheeler Road in Norfolk. Responding Troopers found the residence unoccupied and on fire. Fire Department personnel arrived and were able to bring the fire under control before it destroyed the residence.
At approximately 1:45 a.m. Troopers at Troop B received a call from a homeowner at 206 Westside Road in Norfolk, indicating that she heard intruders in her basement and that they had fled her residence after she yelled to them.
TFC Paul Makuc of the State Police Fire Marshal’s office was responding to the call for the fire at 292 Wheeler Road when he diverted to the intruder call. The intruders fled the residence and upon TFC Makuc’s arrival in the neighborhood, he discovered that the Norfolk Curling Club located at 70 Golf Drive (behind the Westside Road address) was on fire. Fire Department personnel from several area towns responded to both fire locations.
At approx. 1:26 a.m. State Police Troop B received a 911 call from a male party stating he had been involved in a motor vehicle crash on Mountain Road, Norfolk, which is less than a mile from the Westside Road intruder address and the Curling Club fire on Golf Drive. Responding Trooper Stebbins found two male subjects outside of the vehicle on Mountain Rd. The operator was identified as Kyle Majewski, DOB: 09/17/92, of 8 Prock Hill Rd., Sandisfield, MA, and the passenger as Matthew Carey, DOB: 03/31/92, of 87 Briarwood Trail, Torrington, CT.
Further investigation of the motor vehicle crash revealed evidence linking the two males to the Norfolk Curling Club as well as the Wheeler Road address. Numerous Norfolk street signs and mailboxes were also located near the Curling Club scene which had been taken from the Doolittle Road/Wheeler Road area. Subsequent investigative efforts by State Police detectives of the State Police Western District Major Crime Squad andTroopers from the State Police Fire Marshal’s Office led to both Majewski and Carey being charged with the following offenses:
