STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE POLICE SHOOTING

Today 05/23/10 Seymour Police received information that a suspect who was despondent after a domestic issue might be in the Seymour area.  It was determined by investigators that the subject might be on Route 67 in Seymour at the Oxford town line.  The suspect was reported to be in a small black car.

Two Seymour Officers responded at about 1:00 p.m. to a convenience store gas station on Route 67 near the town line of Oxford where they observed the suspect car parked in the parking lot of that establishment.  Both Seymour Police Officers parked in a tactical position and observed the male subject in the car. The male subject was armed with a handgun that was pointed at himself.  The Seymour Officers verbally ordered the suspect numerous times to disarm himself. A third Seymour Officer also responded and he also took a tactical position.

The suspect suddenly shot himself and then leveled the gun towards the two initial responding Seymour police officers.  The third police officer observed the weapon being pointed toward the Seymour officers and the police officer was forced to discharge his service weapon at the suspect.

The suspect was treated at the scene by EMS and was then transported to Bridgeport Hospital Emergency Department, where shortly after admission he was pronounced dead.

The shooting scene was secured by Seymour Police Officers and, at the request of the Seymour Chief of Police and the Milford State's Attorney, the Connecticut State Police

Central District Major Crime Squad Detectives responded to conduct an investigation into this shooting.
