Interrupted a burglary in progress at Prospect Shell Station

On Monday early morning hours at approximately 1:34 a.m., State Police Troop “I” Bethany  received a “911” call from an Off-Duty Police Officer, reporting that he had just observed and interrupted a burglary in progress at Prospect Shell Station located on  28 Waterbury Road, Prospect. The Officer reported that he observed a mini-van backed against the front of the building.  He stated that as he pulled into the lot of the gas station, the vehicle’s headlights came on and the vehicle sped out of the lot, North onto RT 69.

The officer stated that as he pulled into the lot of the gas station, the vehicle’s headlights came on and the vehicle sped out of the lot, North onto RT 69.  The Officer reported that he chased the suspect vehicle. The operator of the fleeing mini-van lost control of the vehicle as he turned onto Orchard Road. The vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in the backyard of 3 Orchard Road, where both occupants fled from the vehicle on foot. It was reported that both suspects were dressed in dark clothing.   A perimeter was established by responding troopers and several Troopers including a State Police K-9 team responded to conduct a search for two suspects.   Area Police Departments were advised of the incident and search.

The van a 2000 Dodge Caravan, used and abandoned by the suspects was seized by State Police and was transported to Troop “I” for further processing.  The steering column of the van was damaged and it appears that this van is an unreported stolen vehicle.  Troopers located and seized several items of evidence at the scene.

The Prospect Resident Trooper State Police Detectives and Troop–I Troopers are continuing this criminal investigation.

The building at the gas station sustained damage to the front wall and windows and it appears that this was an attempt to steal the ATM machine inside.  Prospect building official responded to the scene to ensure the building’s integrity.

State Police are asking anyone who has any information or observed any suspicious vehicle or people in the area of this attempted burglary to call State Police 203 393 4200
