MOURN DEATH OF FELLOW TROOPER

     On Monday, October 4, 2010, the Connecticut State Police family suffered a tremendous loss when State Police Sergeant John Scannell passed away unexpectedly.

     Sgt. Scannell, a nine-plus year veteran of the State Police, died at his home. The cause of death is undetermined at this time.

     Sgt. Scannell, 33, entered the Connecticut State Police Academy on June 29, 2001 and graduated with the 114^th Training Troop on January 17, 2002.  In June, Sgt. Scannell was promoted from Trooper First Class to Sergeant and was assigned to Troop D in Danielson.  

     Sgt. Scannell previously served as a Trooper at Troop D and at Troop C in Tolland.  He also served as the Resident State Trooper in Stafford.  During his State Police Career, Sgt. Scannell earned awards for Meritorious Service, Lifesaving Service and three Unit Citations. 

     Sgt. Scannell earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Worcester State College and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.  A devoted husband and father, Sgt. Scannell lived with his family in Tolland. 

     A highly respected Trooper, Sgt. Scannell served with distinction and was well-liked by Troopers and Administrators at Troop D and throughout the agency.

     “The passing of Sgt. Scannell is a huge loss for the Connecticut State Police,” said Public Safety Commissioner James M. Thomas.  “He was a true professional who put public service above all else.”

     Colonel Thomas Davoren, the Commanding officer of the Connecticut State Police, described that Sgt. Scannell as “A dedicated member of the State Police.  His brother and sister Troopers will miss him tremendously.”
