TROOPERS REPORT ON FIRST WINTER SNOWSTORM

   The first major snowstorm today kept Troopers extremely busy, especially during the morning commute.   Midnight-shift Troopers remained on patrol to respond, along with days shift Troopers, to the numerous accidents and incidents reported during the morning commute.

   Troopers responded to, and investigated, 157 accidents during the snowstorm.  There were 13 non life-threatening injuries reported in these crashes.   Many of these accidents were caused by drivers going too fast for the slippery conditions that existed during the height of the storm. 

   In addition to the accidents Troopers also responded to more than 1,100 calls for
service statewide. These included vehicle spin-outs without damage, cars and tractor trailer trucks becoming stuck in the travel portion of the road and blocking traffic, and drivers with vehicles that ran out of gas or experienced other types of vehicle issues. 

   Troopers remind motorists to be aware of pending snowstorms as winter progresses.  Monitor temperatures and watch for possible freezing conditions which cause slippery roads.  Prepare your vehicle for winter driving with proper tires, wipers and sufficient fuel. 

   All drivers should always reduce their speed in inclement weather regardless of the type of vehicle driven.  If the road appears wet, assume that it is slippery.
