STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE SUSPICIOUS

PACKAGE AT WOODBURY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On Wednesday, 09/16/09, at 12:09 p.m. State Police at Troop L received a complaint from Alice Jones, the Principal of the Woodbury Elementary School, regarding a student who told a teacher that he had a bomb with him and made threatening statements.

State Troopers and members of the Woodbury Resident Trooper’s Office responded and secured the school and the area.  A thirteen-year-old juvenile male was taken into protective custody and transported to Danbury Hospital via Woodbury EMS for a psychiatric evaluation; charges will follow.

The school followed its emergency plans and evacuated the building.  Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Bomb Squad arrived and examined the suspicious package.  A complete examination of the package determined that it did not contain an explosive device.

In addition, State Police Troopers and K-9 teams conducted a complete search of the school building for any other potential devices.  No other packages or devices were located.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Cronin was notified and responded to the scene.

State Police are continuing the investigation. Juvenile referral is anticipated.
