State Police Investigate Suspicious Death At Garner Correctional

Today 12/31/09 at approximately 1:30 p.m. State Police Troop A was notified by Department of Corrections Officials that an inmate was located in the shower area of the medical wing of the Garner Correctional Facility suffering from a head injury.

Emergency care was provided at the correctional facility and the inmate was transported  to UCONN Medical Center in Farmington where, shortly after admission, the inmate was pronounced dead.

The scene was secured by Correctional Officers and the State Police Western District Major Crime Detectives have responded to the Garner Correctional Facility to initiate and conduct the criminal investigation into this suspicious death.

The identity of the inmate is being withheld to allow for next of kin notification.  A post mortem examination will be conducted by the Office of the Chief States Medical Examiner to determine the manner and cause of death.

The inmate is identified as GILBERT SOTO DOB:2/24/59 LKA Hartford,Ct. Preliminary investigation by State Police has determined that the Inmate became dizzy in shower and passed out. He transported to UCONN where he died in ER from complications. State Police have learned that the inmate had an extensive medical history.

Troopers will document all facts and circumstances of this death. At this time it appears that there is no criminal aspect to this death.

This case remains under investigation.
