CONNECTICUT STATE POLICE 2009 LABOR DAY

MOTOR VEHICLE ENFORCEMENT OPERATION UNDERWAY

The Connecticut State Police announced today that State Troopers have begun and will continue to aggressively enforce motor vehicle violations and impaired driving violations during the upcoming Labor Day Holiday weekend.

State Police enforcement will include the use of sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols with high visibility vehicles, as well as with unmarked specialty enforcement vehicles.  Connecticut’s highways will be saturated with Troopers to enhance the safety of motorists throughout the holiday weekend, especially during high-risk nighttime hours.

“State Troopers have made more than 500 arrests for operating under the influence since the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day,” said Colonel Thomas Davoren, commanding officer of the State Police. “Troopers will continue this aggressive enforcement campaign through the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day weekend, by removing impaired drivers from local roads and highways.”

Driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher is illegal in all 50 states.

“Let our message this holiday weekend be clear:  We will not tolerate impaired driving, reckless driving or blatant violations of motor vehicle laws.  Breaking state motor vehicle laws endangers all people on Connecticut’s roads and highways,” noted Public Safety Commissioner John A. Danaher III.  “If you are in violation of state laws, you will be arrested. No excuses, no exceptions.”

The motoring public is asked to assist the State Police.  If you see a suspected drunk driver, report it to police immediately by dialing 911, as this is a true emergency.  Help us to make Labor Day 2009 the safest holiday this year.

During Labor Day weekend in 2008, Connecticut State Police issued 1,042 speeding tickets, 365 seatbelt violations, 1,483 other violations, and made 64 drunken driving arrests.  State Police investigated 275 accidents, 56 with injury and one fatality.
