UPDATE

TWO KILLED IN PLANE CRASH NEAR WINDHAM AIRPORT IDENTIFIED

   At approximately 3:43 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, the crash of a small aircraft in a wooded area adjacent to Route 6 – a short distance from Windham Airport in North Windham, CT – was reported to Troop K. Fire and Medical personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene. The aircraft, which burst into flames upon impact, was burning, hampering efforts of the first responders.

   Upon the arrival of firefighters from the North Windham and Windham Center Fire Departments, the fire was quickly contained to the wooded area and extinguished.  It was determined that the aircraft was occupied by two persons who were located deceased within the heavily damaged and burned wreckage.

   Due to the severity of the damage, the identification of the aircraft was not apparent or made for a period of time. Officials from Windham Airport, Connecticut Department of Transportation and the FAA all responded to the scene to begin the task of investigating this aircraft crash. The National Transportation Safety Board responded to conduct an investigation of this incident.

   Investigators from the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene to recover  and remove the bodies of the deceased. The bodies were taken to OCME, where a determination of the identities of these persons was made through medical records.

   On this date the positive identification of the deceased was made by the OCME:

1. Louis Martinez, age 82, d.o.b. 09/06/1924, of 63  First Street, Bayport, NY

2. Ronald Holtzman, age 45, d.o.b. 12/08/1961, of 47 Eagle Lane, Hauppauge, NY
