FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

12/28/2006

                                     NEW YEAR HOLIDAY

The Connecticut State Police plan to be very active on all highways and roads in the State of Connecticut. Additional State Troopers will be out to supplement the traditional patrol force.  This effort is to enhance the public safety on our highways and roadways across the State of Connecticut.  In addition to the regular patrol responsibilities Connecticut State Troopers will concentrate patrol and enforcement efforts on roads and highways where incidents, that have involved alcohol, have occurred.

To accomplish this enforcement task, uniformed State Troopers will use our unmarked non-traditional patrol cars (intrepids, impalas, and cameros), regular marked patrol cars and the State Police Aviation Unit. Traffic on New Years Eve is expected to be moderate to heavy during the evening hours of New Years Eve.

Last year (2005) during the New Years Holiday the following enforcement and accident activity took place. The period of time measured (4 days) was from the early morning hours from 12:01 a.m. on Friday 12/30/05 to 01/02/2006 midnight

TOTAL ACCIDENTS 425             ENFORCEMENT TOTAL 1387

     Fatal Crashes   0                     Speeding  663

     Injury Crashes    56                  Seatbelt    132

                                                 Other Arrests 590

                             Drunk Driving arrests   35

The 2006 New Years Holiday enforcement effort can be enhanced by motorists who report suspected drunk driver to police. Motorists are reminded if you see a suspect drunk driver report it that to law enforcement immediately.  Help us keep the roads and highways safe.
