Commissioner Higgins joins Black History Month presentation "When Hate Shatters Our Safe Spaces"

THIS SUNDAY: COMMISSIONER HIGGINS JOINS BLACK HISTORY MONTH PRESENTATION ‘WHEN HATE SHATTERS OUR SAFE SPACES’

DESPP Commissioner Ronnell A. Higgins will join a virtual panel discussion about hate crimes on Sunday afternoon Feb. 16 that includes a presentation by Nathan Williams, a former Assistant United States Attorney, on the trial of Dylann Roof, who was convicted in the killing of nine members of the Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.

The virtual presentation, titled “When Hate Shatters Our Safe Spaces,” is sponsored by the Greater Waterbury Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The Black History Month program begins at 3 p.m.

Williams, a veteran of nearly 25 years in federal and state courts, tried over 20 federal cases to verdict, including the 2016 death penalty case for the hate-based murders of nine parishioners in Charleston during bible study. After the presentation by Williams there will be a discussion with state and local law enforcement officials.

The virtual program is open to the public.
