DESPP RELEASES ‘CRIME IN CONNECTICUT’ REPORT
Crime in Connecticut, the annual report of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, is the state’s most comprehensive compilation of crime statistics, providing detailed information on criminal offenses and arrests. We are proud to have 100 percent participation from state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies in this initiative.
The 2023 report for the first time makes full use of the relatively new National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), which provides more detailed information about crime incidents. NIBRS became the national standard for reporting crime in 2021, which means that statewide data in this format is only available for the last three years.
Details from Crime in Connecticut 2023 and reports from previous years may be found here.
Gov. Ned Lamont said, “Any instance of any crime is unacceptable, and this data reported by Connecticut’s state and local law enforcement officers shows that our state continues to be one of the safest in the entire country. Over the last several years, we’ve made significant investments in programs and services that are proven to help deter crime, and we need to keep moving forward on these kinds of policies that have a real impact on improving the safety of our communities and the people who live here. And while we still have a couple of months left to go in 2024, preliminary data from law enforcement for the current calendar year indicates positive trends are continuing to drive down crime in nearly every category.”
DESPP Commissioner Ronnell A. Higgins said, “We know that Connecticut is one of the safest states in the nation, with serious crimes steadily declining over the last decade. At the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, we are committed to our ongoing partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement as we make Connecticut a safe place to live, work and study.’’
Colonel Daniel Loughman, Commanding Officer of the Connecticut State Police, said, “The priority of the Connecticut State Police is to protect the citizens of our state. We are constantly analyzing data like these crime statistics, which allows us to proactively focus our approach to safeguarding Connecticut’s residents and keeping Connecticut safe.” “We are grateful for those residents who continue to be our partners in safety by alerting us to suspected crimes. Our Troopers continue to be here for quick responses and proactive efforts.”
Under NIBRS, there are three main categories for reporting crime: Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Property, and Crimes Against Society. The new Crime in Connecticut report provides detailed background data on the distribution of crimes by total and category.
Additionally, the report includes crime statistics from 2014 through 2023, which illustrate a long-term trend of lower crimes rates in Connecticut.
