BANDS OF VERY HEAVY RAIN CONTINUE MOVING ACROSS EASTERN CONNECTICUT…ADDITIONAL BANDS OF HEAVY RAINFALL ARE MOVING INTO SOUTHWESTERN CT AT THIS TIME…THESE NEW BANDS STRETCH DOWN THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST…FLOOD WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR MOST OF CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN CT…A TORNADO WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3:00 PM…

At 11:40 AM radar showed bands of very heavy rainfall (rainfall rates up to 2” per hour) moving thru eastern Connecticut.  Several towns are reporting minor to moderate urban flooding.  Total rainfall thus far has averaged 2” – 4” across the state with a few towns receiving 5”+.   There has also been some spotty local wind damage to trees and powerlines. Eversource and UI are currently reporting a total of 3,577 customers without power across the state.

Additional bands of heavy rainfall are moving up thru the mid-Atlantic states (see map to the right) towards Connecticut at this time.  These bands may slowly intensify as they move into our area.  If these bands combine into one solid band of heavy rainfall, then parts of the state could receive another 3” – 5”+ inches of rainfall this afternoon into this evening.  If the bands remain broken apart, then towns can expect 1” – 2” of additional rainfall.

This Afternoon:
Additional bands of heavy rain are expected to move across the state from southwest to northeast.  If these bands linkup and start to train over any towns continuously, then moderate to major urban flooding is possible along with moderate flooding of streams.  If the bands remain separated, towns can expect shorter periods of heavy rain and minor urban and small stream flooding.  The activity is still expected to taper off to showers late this evening.

Towns are advised to closely monitor radars this afternoon and to report any significant flooding or wind damage to their DEMHS Regional Offices as time permits.  DESPP / DEMHS will continue to closely monitor the severe weather and heavy rainfall threat today.
