A weak area of low pressure is now merging with the main low over Cape Cod. At 3:45 PM radar showed a wide band of moderate to occasionally heavy wet snow moving from north to south thru Eastern NY, Western MA and CT. Snowfall rates up to 2” per hour are occurring in this large band. Up to 18” of snow has already fallen in the NW hills. Eversource and UI are currently reporting 8,463 customers without power in the NW hills. Temperatures currently range from the low 30’s in the NW hills up to near 40 F along the southeast coast. Winds are currently gusting to 25 - 40 mph at times along the coast. Here’s the latest forecast:
Rest of This Afternoon: Moderate to occasionally heavy wet snow is expected to spread from western to eastern CT over the next few hours. The wet snow combined with strong north winds will likely cause additional power outages during the rest of the afternoon. Moderate to potentially major impacts are expected on afternoon driving conditions and power outages in the higher elevations with snowfall rates over 1” inch per hour at times.
Tonight: The heavy wet snow is forecast to taper down to bands of light to moderate snow later this evening. Some bands of light to moderate snow may continue in Western and Eastern CT overnight. Strong northwest winds gusting to 40 - 50 MPH will continue to cause additional power outages.
Wednesday Morning: Any lingering bands of light snow should end around daybreak. A minor to moderate impact is expected for the morning rush hour with slush and some black ice on some roads.
