WIND ADVISORIES IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE STATE…WINDS GUSTING TO 35 - 50 MPH AT TIMES IN SOUTHWESTERN CT AS A CLUSTER OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MOVES THRU THE STATE…COASTAL FLOOD WARNINGS IN EFFECT…TIDES CURRENTLY RUNNING 2 – 3 FEET ABOVE NORMAL

As of 5:30 AM Eversource and UI were reporting a total of 19,286 customers without power across the state.  Most of the outages are located in southern and western CT and are increasing quickly.  Winds are currently blowing from the southeast along the coast at 35 – 50 MPH.  Winds have been lagging below the forecast overnight (see red line and hourly points on graph), however the winds are now increasing quickly in western CT.  Radar currently shows a cluster of showers and a few thunderstorms moving quickly to the north along the CT / NY border.

Southeast winds (red bars on graph) are forecast to peak over the next 3 – 4 hours with gusts of 45 55 MPH at times.  A few towns may see higher wind gusts during heavier showers or isolated thunderstorms.  The winds are then forecast to weaken down to 30 40 MPH by 10:00 AM.  A second period of strong winds (40 50 MPH) is expected as a strong cold front moves across the state early this afternoon.  Moderate rainfall (green bars on graph) of 2” – 3” may cause minor urban and river flooding.  In addition, astronomical tides will be at their monthly highs and moderate coastal flooding is expected during high tide this morning which will occur around at 8:00 AM in New London, 10:00 AM in Bridgeport and 11:00 AM in Stamford.  Very cold air (blue line on graph) is forecast to move into the state this afternoon with lows tonight between 10 – 15 F above and wind chills near zero tonight and Saturday night.  Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing until next Tuesday.   This may cause a hazard for any homes that remain without power over the weekend.
