HENRI DOWNGRADED TO A TROPICAL DEPRESSION…. POTENTIAL FOR WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORMS ON MONDAY…

At 8:00 PM the center of Tropical Depression Henri was located approximately 10  miles southwest of Hartford.  T.D. Henri is moving to the west northwest at 7 MPH.

At 8:00 PM radar showed some showers from T.D. Henri in southwestern CT.  Winds have subsided considerably and are currently gusting to 20 - 30 MPH along the coast and 10 – 20 MPH inland.

Eversource and UI are currently reporting a total of 21,711 customers without power across the state mainly in central and eastern CT.  For the rest of the evening and overnight a few additional showers may occur in western CT as the number of power outages slowly comes down.

Heavy thunderstorm activity expected on Monday: Clusters of thunderstorms will likely form in the remnant circulation of Henri on Monday across the state (see radar simulation to the right).  These thunderstorms will likely contain torrential downpours (1” – 2” of rain per hour) which may cause significant urban flooding.  Flood Watches have been extended until 8:00 PM Monday evening for the entire state.  These thunderstorms may also contain dangerous lightning and some gusty winds.  The risk of tornadoes and large hail is not significant.  The most likely time period for thunderstorms is between noon and 8:00 PM on Monday.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will monitor the risk for thunderstorms and urban flooding on Monday.
