3-DAY HEATWAVE UNDERWAY…

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS ISSUED FOR MOST OF THE STATE THIS AFTERNOON…

MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS EVENING…

We are now in the 2nd day of a 3-day heat wave.  Today is expected to be the hottest and most humid day and the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning starting at noon for most of the state except for Litchfield county and the southeast coast where a Heat Advisory is in effect.

Air temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 90’s inland this afternoon with the heat index above 105 F at times.  An Air Quality Alert has also been issued for most of the State away from the coast.  In addition, some smoke from western wildfires may move across our area during the day causing hazy conditions.

These hot temperatures combined with high humidity and poor air quality will cause issues for the elderly, very young and anyone with respiratory ailments who is working or running errands outdoors.

The NOAA Storm Prediction has placed Connecticut into the Marginal Risk Category for severe thunderstorms this evening.  A weak front will approach the state this evening from the northwest and a few scattered strong to severe thunderstorms may move across the state.  However, the storms are not expected to arrive until after sunset and should be just borderline severe.

The forecast for Friday is just as hot with slightly lower humidity.  Highs are forecast to be in the upper 90’s again with the heat index between 100 – 105 F at times Friday afternoon.  The heat wave is expected to end on Saturday with highs in the mid 80’s.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to monitor this heat wave and may issue additional updates if needed.
