FINAL DAY OF HEAT WAVE…HEAT ADVISORIES REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE STATE…SLIGHT TO ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON… CALL 2-1-1 TO LOCATE OPEN COOLING CENTERS

We are now in the final day of a 4-day heat wave.  Heat Advisories remain in effect for the entire state for today. At 10:00 AM temperatures across the state ranged from 80 – 85 along the coast up to 85 - 90 in northern CT with humid conditions.     

For today, high temperatures are forecast to reach the mid to upper 90’s with the heat index between 100 – 105 F.  The full sun temperature may reach 105 – 110 F.  

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed northern Connecticut into the enhanced risk category and central and southern CT into the slight risk category for severe thunderstorms this afternoon.  The primary hazard from these thunderstorms is expected to be from strong winds (15 – 30% chance) and hail (5% chance). Other risks may include dangerous lightning and torrential downpours.  The most likely time period for severe thunderstorms is expected to be from 4:00 – 10:00 PM.

The heat wave is expected to break on Thursday with highs holding in the mid 80’s.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to closely monitor the latest forecasts.

This will be the final update on the heat wave.  However, an update on this afternoon’s severe threat will be sent out at noon.
