LIGHT TO MODERATE WET SNOW EXPECTED ON WEDNESDAY…NO ADVISORIES ISSUED AT THIS TIME…
A weak low pressure system is forecast to move to our south on Wednesday. The HRRR and GFS models are forecasting that a few periods of light to moderate wet snow will occur during the day on Wednesday as the low passes to our south. The following forecast is based on a blend of the two models:
Wednesday Morning: Light snow is forecast to move into southwestern CT around 6:00 AM and then spread across the state by 8:00 AM. The light snow may become steady to moderate at times during the morning rush hour. Most of the snow is expected to melt on contact with any well traveled roads. However, a little slush could accumulate on less traveled roads especially in the higher elevations of the western or eastern hills. The overall impact on the morning rush hour is expected to be minor. Temperatures are forecast to slowly climb from the upper 20’s at daybreak to the lower 30’s by noon.
Wednesday Afternoon: Another period of light to occasionally moderate wet snow is expected, however with temperatures in the mid 30’s, the falling snow is expected to melt on contact with most roads. Roads across most of the state should only be wet for the afternoon rush hour. The impact on the afternoon rush hour is expected to be very minor. The wet snow is expected to end perhaps as a mix by 7:00 PM. Total accumulations (mainly on grassy surfaces) are forecast to range from around an inch in the valleys and along the coast up to 2” – 3” in the western and eastern hills.
Wednesday Night: Some black ice may form on untreated roads after midnight as temperatures drop into the upper 20’s. The impact for the Thursday morning rush hour is expected to be minor with just a few patches of black ice.
DESPP/DEMHS will continue to monitor this minor weather event.
