WINTER STORM WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR NORTHERN CT…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHERN CT…MODERATE WINTER STORM UNDERWAY ACROSS THE STATE…MORE SLEET/FREEZING RAIN AND LESS SNOW IS EXPECTED…

At 5:00 AM moderate snow was falling across central and northern CT with a mix of sleet and freezing rain falling in southern CT.  Temperatures are currently in the mid to upper 20’s across the state.  Here’s the latest forecast:

This Morning:
Moderate snow is forecast to be falling across northern CT at the start of the rush hour at 6:00 AM with a mix in southern CT.  A moderate impact on driving is expected with an inch or two of snow on many roads.  The snow is expected to change to a mix of sleet and freezing rain in central CT by 7:00 AM (see yellow dashed line on map).  The mix line is forecast to move north and reach northern CT by 8:00 AM and into southern MA by 9:00 AM.  Driving conditions are forecast to slowly improve later this morning as temperatures in the Hartford area reach freezing by noon.

This Afternoon
: Sleet, freezing rain and rain are forecast to taper off to drizzle by mid-afternoon.  The impact on the afternoon rush hour is expected to be minor.  Roads by 3:00 PM are expected to be wet with just some slush on shoulders and ramps.

Tonight:
Some patches of black ice may form especially on untreated roads as temperatures fall into the teens overnight.

Total snowfall is expected to range from 1” – 2” in southern CT, 2” – 4” in central CT and 4” – 6” in Northern CT.  There may be a little more snow in the NW hills.

DESPP/DEMHS will continue to closely monitor this winter storm.
