WEAK LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM EXPECTED TO BRING LIGHT TO OCCASIONALLY MODERATE SNOWFALL TO CONNECTICUT ON TUESDAY…NO WATCHES OR ADVISORIES ISSUED AT THIS TIME…

The GFS and NAM models are indicating that a weak area of low pressure will move from the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula to just south of Long Island on Tuesday.  The low is then expected to intensify as it departs southeast of  Cape Cod Tuesday evening.  This weak low may push up some moisture off the water south of Long Island as the low pressure system begins to intensify.  The timing of the intensification will determine the amount of snowfall.  The earlier the low begins to intensify the more snow can be expected.  The following forecast is based on a blend of the GFS and NAM models:

Tuesday Morning: Light snow is forecast to enter the state from west to east between 5:00 – 8:00 AM.  The snow may become moderate at times by late morning with maximum snowfall rates around ½” per hour.  Temperatures are forecast to rise from the teens into the mid 20’s with light winds of less than 10 MPH.  The impact on the morning rush hour is expected to be minor with a thin coating of snow on most roads.

Tuesday Afternoon: A period of moderate snow is possible especially across central Connecticut with a mix in southern CT between noon and 5:00 PM.  Maximum snowfall rates may reach ¾” per hour at times with light winds around 10 MPH.  High temperatures are forecast to reach near freezing.  The impact on the afternoon rush hour is expected to be minor to moderate with a few inches of snow on some roads.

Tuesday Evening: The snow is forecast to end from west to east early in the evening.  Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the upper teens.

Total snowfall is currently forecast to range from 2” – 3” along the MA border and also along the coast.  A band of higher snowfall totals ranging from 3” – 6” is possible across central Connecticut.

The next update will be sent out at 7:00 AM Tuesday morning or sooner if the forecast changes.

Sincerely,

Doug Glowacki
