MODERATE WINTER STORM EXPECTED ON SUNDAY…WINTER STORM WARNINGS ISSUED BY THE NWS FOR SOUTHERN CT…WINTER STORM WATCHES ISSUED FOR NORTHERN CT…

The latest runs of the NAM and GFS are bringing the storm track a little closer to our area and are forecasting that we will be impacted by a moderate winter storm tomorrow.  The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for southern Fairfield county and all of New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties for Sunday.  The NWS has also issued winter storm watches for all 4 northern counties.  Here is the latest forecast based on a blend of the two models:

Sunday Morning: Light snow is forecast to spread into the state from southwest to northeast between 7:00–9:00 AM.  The snow is forecast to  become moderate in central CT and heavy at times in southeastern CT by noon.  Temps are forecast to rise from the low 20’s to the mid 20’s with a northeast wind gusting to 30 MPH at times by noon.  A moderate impact on travel is expected by noon with a few inches of snow on most roads.

Sunday Afternoon: Moderate snow is expected in the NW hills and moderate to heavy snow is expected along the I-84 corridor and in southeastern CT early in the afternoon with snowfall rates just over 1” per hour at times.  The snow is expected to taper off to light snow by 4:00 PM and end by 6:00 PM.   High temps are forecast to reach the upper 20’s with northeast winds gusting to 35 MPH at times thru mid-afternoon.  A high end moderate impact on travel is possible for several hours during the early and mid-afternoon with snow covered roads and poor visibility.

Sunday Evening: Clearing during the evening.  North winds gusting to 25 - 30 MPH at times.  Travel conditions should improve to a minor impact by late evening depending on the total snowfall accumulation.

Total snowfall is currently forecast to range from 3” – 5” in the Northwest Hills, 5” – 8” along the I-84 corridor and up to 6” – 10” in Southeastern CT.

Another update will be sent out at 8:00 AM Sunday morning or sooner if the forecast changes significantly.

Sincerely,

Doug Glowacki
