MAJOR WINTER STORM UNDERWAY ACROSS OUR AREA…BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR NEW LONDON COUNTY…WINTER STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR THE REST OF THE STATE…

 

At 8:00 AM radar showed moderate to heavy snow falling across most of the state.  The heaviest snow is currently falling in a band located in southeastern CT with snowfall rates around 2” per hour and visibilities down to ¼ mile.  Temperatures are currently in the mid 20’s with north winds gusting to 40 - 45 MPH at times along the coast. 


This Morning:
Snow, heavy at times (snowfall rates of 1” – 2” per hour) is expected, especially in Eastern and Southern CT, with blizzard conditions at times.  North winds gusting to 50 - 60 MPH at times along the coast and 40 – 50 MPH inland with temperatures in the mid 20’s.  The impact on travel is expected to be major with whiteout conditions at times and snow-covered roads.  A minor number of power outages are also expected.   


This Afternoon:
Snow heavy at times in central and eastern CT.  The snow is expected to begin tapering off in western CT early this afternoon.  The snow is then expected to slowly taper off in central CT by late this afternoon.  Towns can expect a moderate impact on travel in western CT and a major impact on travel in eastern CT.  Highs in the mid 20’s with north northwest winds gusting to 40 – 60 MPH at times. 


This Evening:
The snow is expected to taper off in eastern CT between 6:00 – 9:00 PM.  Becoming very cold overnight with lows in the single digits, northwest winds gusting to 20 – 30 MPH at times and wind chills between 0 and -10 F.  Total snowfall is currently forecast to range from 3” – 6” in far western CT, 6” – 12” in central CT and 12” – 18” in eastern CT.
