Fair Housing and Covid
Housing issues are among the most severe of those connected to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people are struggling to afford their mortgage payments or rent and find themselves confronting housing instability for themselves and their families. With the need to remain socially distant and quarantine if necessary, housing stability and access to new housing if necessary is more important than ever.
The CHRO has a number of ways to help.
If you believe you have been discriminated against on the basis of a protected class, contact our Fair Housing Unit. This includes being denied housing for suspicions you might have Covid-19 or be more vulnerable to it based, among other things, on:
- Being older and more vulnerable
- Being younger and stereotyped as more likely to spread the disease
- Having underlying medical conditions increasing vulnerability
- Having a national origin or ancestry stereotyped as having a higher incidence of Covid-19
- Having family members living with you that may be seen as having an increased risk of Covid-19
The CHRO will also be hosting a series of webinars related to Covid-19, including those focused on housing issues. For more information, see our list of Covid-19 related webinars.
If you have any questions related to Covid-19 and discrimination, email CHRO.Covid@ct.gov or call (860) 541-3428.
