What is the Interpreter Standards Board

The Interpreting Standards Board was created under Public Act 25-144. Under this legislation, the ISB has several key responsibilities that will guide the work ahead, including:

  • Setting statewide education, training, and certification standards for interpreters across community, educational, legal, and medical settings;
  • This Includes specialized training for interpreters who work with specific populations, like individuals who are DeafBlind;
  • Establishing operational standards for organizations and providers supplying interpreting services;
  • Expanding and promoting interpreter access to educational, training, and credentialing opportunities to grow the pool of interpreters in the state; and
  • Receiving and reviewing complaints related to interpreter conduct or noncompliance with state standards.
