STATE POLICE RESPOND TO TRAIN DERAILMENT in LISBON

A nine-car Worchester Providence Railroad train derailed at the intersection of Route 12 and Bundy Hill Road, Lisbon.  It was reported that three cars went into the river.  Three additional cars slide down the embankment and are adjacent to the river, three other cars went off the opposite side of the track and hit tress into the power lines.  One of the railroad cars is carrying 25,000 gallons of Latex.  The car was breached and is leaking the latex product.  Another car is empty but did contain butane residue and that residue is reported to be flammable.

State Troopers responding have secured the scene. Route 12 between Norwich and Lisbon is closed and will remain closed for an extended period of time.

State Police also have assigned the accident reconstruction unit to respond to the scene to assist in documenting this train accident.

Due to downed live wires, CL&P is also enroute to the scene. Other agencies responding are: DOT, Lisbon Fire Department, and DEP Haz-Mat.

The railroad is obtaining heavy equipment from New York and Pennsylvania to upright the train cars. This will be an extensive operation and it is expected that the road will be closed for two days.
