STATE POLICE MAJOR CRIME SQUAD

INVESTIGATE POLICE SHOOTING

**Update 2**

On 05/24/09 shortly after 1:30 p.m. East Hartford Police responded to a reported domestic violence call at 38 Long Hill St East Hartford.   It was reported to police that the male subject might be armed with a weapon. East Hartford Police requested K-9 assistance from a West Hartford Police K-9 team who also responded to the scene.

Upon arrival officers were directed to the rear of the home near a wood line where the male subject was located. The subject appeared to be injured was conscious and was in possession of a long gun. The officers verbally directed the subject several times to put the weapon down.  The male subject suddenly leveled the long gun at the police officers who were forced to discharge their service weapons at the subject. Neither officer was injured.

The male subject suffered apparent gunshot wounds. The wounded subject was provided emergency care by East Hartford EMS at the scene and was transported to Hartford Hospital in serious condition where he died from his injury.

The Hartford State’s Attorney, East Hartford Police Chief and West Hartford Police Chief requested that the State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad respond to the scene to conduct the investigation into this police shooting. 

State Police Detectives are conducting the investigation into this shooting incident assisted by the Hartford State’s Attorneys Office, and the State Police Forensic Lab . State Police Detectives processed and documented the scene. In addition all evidence related to this shooting incident was seized.

***Update***

The deceased male is identified as ROBERT GILBERT  DOB: 11/26/56 38 Long Hill St. East Hartford, Ct. A post mortem examination was conducted by the Office of the Chief state’s Medical Examiner

In addition State Police are withholding the identity of the involved officers at this time.  

The case remains under investigation by Connecticut State Police .
