A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive December 12, 2009, to examine all aspects of the Connecticut State Police policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Colonel Thomas Davoren announced today.
Verification by the team that Connecticut State Police meets the Commission's state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation - a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, Colonel Davoren said.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments. A team of assessors will take comments from citizens who call 1-877-310-3630 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 14, 2009. Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the State Police Headquarters. Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Connecticut State Police’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation/recognition are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215.
The Connecticut State Police is required to comply with 414 standards in order to gain accredited/recognized status, Colonel Davoren said. The accreditation measures the level of professional police service rendered to the people of Connecticut. The accreditation ensures that professionalism is maintained.
The CALEA Program Manager for Connecticut State Police is Lt. Marianne Daly. She said the assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.
The assessors are: Special Agent (Ret.) Virgil Young, Jr. of Knoxville, TN, and Mr. Gerald Jarsocrak of Harrisburg, PA.
Once the CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited/recognition status, Lt. Daly stated.
Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
