On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 10:44 a.m. State Police was notified by Department of Corrections Officials that a serious injury assault had occurred at the McDougal-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield. Officials from the Correctional Institution stated that there had been a minor disturbance involving two inmates at the facility.

   State Police Troopers were dispatched to the facility to initiate the criminal investigation into this incident.

   One of the inmates involved in this altercation was transported from the correctional facility via ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition. This seriously injured inmate was identified as Kevin Cales, DOB 07/16/73, who later that evening was pronounced dead at St Francis Hospital.

   State Police Central District Major Crime Detectives conducted the criminal investigation into this incident which resulted in the Detectives submitting an arrest warrant application to Superior Court for the arrest of the accused in this case.  The arrest warrant was issued by the court.

   On 06/11/2008, the accused was transported from the Correctional Facility to GA #13 in Enfield where he was charged and arraigned in Superior Court.
