SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY LAWS UPDATED OCTOBER 1

Effective October 1, 2007, the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry laws have changed,   requiring all registered sex offenders to report their Internet communications identifiers to the State Police Sex Offender Registry Unit.

Public Act 07-4 from the June 2007 Special Session requires “any person who is subject to registration under this section establishes or changes an electronic mail address, instant message address or other similar Internet communication identifier, such person shall, without undue delay, notify the Commissioner of Public Safety in writing of such identifier.”

           

         Any registrant who fails to notify the Commissioner of Public Safety of such information without undue delay shall be guilty of a class D felony if such failure continues for five business days.

         Registered sex offenders will receive forms from the Sex Offender Registry Unit or can report their Internet identifiers in writing by sending a letter to the Department of Public Safety SOR Unit 1111 Country Club Road Middletown, CT 06457. 

         The Connecticut Sex Offender Registry website has averaged just under 800,000 hits per month for the first nine months of 2007. There are currently more than 4,700 registered sex offenders living, working or attending schools in the state.  Information can be searched on the Sex Offender Registry website by last name, town, zip code or by viewing an entire list of registrants. The information is provided free of charge and persons making inquiries do not have to identify themselves.  

         Questions regarding the registration of sex offenders in Connecticut or any information on a registered sex offender that appears to be in violation should be directed to the Connecticut State Police, Sex Offender Registry Unit at 1111 Country Club Road, Middletown, CT 06457. Registry records are also available at local police departments for registrants living within that department's jurisdiction.

Any person who uses information in this registry to injure, harass or commit a criminal act against any person included in the registry or any other person is subject to criminal prosecution.
