MIXED PRECIPITATION CHANGING TO WET SNOW EXPECTED TONIGHT…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES ISSUED FOR LITCHFIELD, FAIRFIELD AND NEW HAVEN COUNTIES…

MAJOR WINTER STORM POSSIBLE NEXT WEEK…

A low pressure system currently located over eastern Ohio will move slowly into northwestern PA by late this afternoon.  A secondary low pressure system is forecast to form near the North Carolina coast this evening.   The secondary low is then forecast to move to the northeast and pass just outside the 40/70 benchmark Saturday afternoon, moving out to sea Saturday evening.  Here’s the latest forecast based on a blend of the GFS, HRRR and NAMHRES models.

This Evening and Overnight: Light rain, mixed with wet snow in the NW Hills is forecast to move into southwestern CT around 7:00 PM and spread slowly across the rest of the state by midnight.  A rain/snow line is expected to move from the NW Hills at 10:00 PM down into central CT by 2:00 AM and down to the coast by 5:00 AM (see yellow dashed lines on map).  The wet snow is expected to fall moderate to occasionally heavy at times around midnight especially in western CT.  Lows are forecast to be near 32 F.  The impact on overnight driving is expected to be minor with some slush and a light snow cover on roads in western CT.

Saturday Morning: The wet snow is expected to taper down to light mixed precipitation by 8:00 AM and end completely by noon.

The next update will be sent out at 3:00 PM this afternoon.

DESPP / DEMHS is keeping an eye on a much bigger storm for next Tuesday and Wednesday.  This could be a major winter storm with deep heavy wet snow.  Updates will start on Sunday if the forecast remains the same over the next two days.
