NICOLE MADE LANDFALL ALONG THE CENTRAL FLORIDA COAST EARLY THIS MORNING…THE REMNANTS OF NICOLE ARE FORECAST TO MOVE JUST WEST OF OUR AREA EARLY SATURDAY MORNING BRINGING MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN AND GUSTY WINDS…

At 10:00 AM the center of Tropical Storm (TS) Nicole was located at 28.2 N, 82.2 W or approximately 30 Miles northeast of Tampa, Florida.  Nicole is moving to the west northwest at 16 MPH and has maximum sustained winds of 50 MPH.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is forecasting that T.S. Nicole will turn to the northwest and then to the north by tonight.  Nicole is then forecast to turn to the northeast by Friday morning and rapidly accelerate up the Appalachian mountain chain as a tropical depression during the day on Friday.

The remnants of Nicole are currently forecast to move just west of our area Saturday morning with sustained south winds between 20 – 30 MPH and gusts of 40 – 55 MPH with the strongest winds expected along the coast and in the higher elevations.  An 8-hour period of moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall is expected late Friday night and early Saturday morning with total rainfall ranging from 1” – 2” across the state.

The gusty winds may cause some scattered power outages.  However, the leaves are off most trees, and this should keep the number of outages in the minor impact range.  The moderate to heavy rainfall may cause some minor urban flooding (especially where drains are clogged with leaves) and some very minor small stream flooding.  Any coastal flooding is also expected to be very minor and limited to wave splash over on very low-lying roads.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to monitor the latest forecasts for Nicole.  Another update on Nicole will be sent out at 11:00 AM on Friday.
