FLOOD WATCHES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE STATE…

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CONTAINING TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS ARE BEGINNING TO DEVELOP IN FAIRFIELD AND NEW HAVEN COUNTIES AND ALSO IN EASTERN CONNECTICUT…THE PRIMARY THREAT REMAINS URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING…


Flood Advisories have been issued by the NWS for central Fairfield, central New Haven and Northern New London counties until 5:45 PM.  At 3:45 PM radar showed three clusters of showers and thunderstorms developing over the state.  The first cluster is in central Fairfield county, the second cluster is in central New Haven county and the third cluster is just
north of the Norwich area.  Rainfall rates in these clusters are estimated between 1” – 2” per hour.   These clusters are moving very slowly to the northeast.  These clusters of showers and thunderstorms are forecast to become more widespread especially across central Connecticut on a line from the Danbury area to the Norwich area over the next few hours.  These clusters could deliver over 4” of rain in a short period of time to some towns.  This amount of rainfall could cause moderate to isolated pockets of major urban flooding later this afternoon and this evening.   


Some small stream flooding is also expected in any areas that receive over 3” of rainfall in less than 3 hours.  Even some river flooding is possible if the clusters of showers and thunderstorms cover large enough areas.  


The period of highest threat for flooding is currently expected
later this afternoon into this evening and again Tuesday morning.  The most likely location for the heaviest rainfall is currently along a wide band stretching from west to east across the middle of the state.  This band includes the cities of Danbury, Waterbury, Torrington, Hartford, New Britain, Meriden, Middletown, Windham and Norwich.  However, these heavy rainfall systems are unpredictable, so all towns should keep a close eye on the radars for any torrential downpours in their towns for the duration of this event.
