The federal Social Security Administration (SSA) offers two programs for people with disabilities who are unable to work and need assistance:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides monthly payments to people who can no longer work due to a medical condition expected to last a year or longer. It requires a work history.
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides monthly payments to people with disabilities who have low income and few resources. It does not require a work history.

Ready to apply for Social Security benefits?

All applications for Social Security benefits must be submitted through the federal Social Security Administration (SSA). Once you’ve applied, ADS-Disability Determination Services (DDS) will then determine your medical eligibility for cash benefits.

What to expect after you apply

Determining your medical eligibility

Once SSA has processed your application, they will send it to ADS-Disability Determination Services (DDS) for review. ADS-DDS determines the medical eligibility for CT citizens who have applied for benefits from Social Security programs, such as:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Doctors and disability specialists consider all the facts in your case. They will use the medical evidence from your doctors and hospitals, clinics, or institutions where you have been treated and all other information. They will ask your doctors:

  • What your medical condition is
  • When your medical condition began
  • How your medical condition limits your activities
  • What the medical tests have shown
  • What treatment you have received

They also will ask for information about your ability to do work-related activities, such as walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, and remembering instructions. Your doctors are not asked to decide if you are disabled.

ADS-DDS may request more information or schedule a further evaluation. According to SSA, processing an application for disability benefits can take 6 to 8 months on average. Please provide requested information as quickly as possible to avoid any unneeded delays. You will be notified when ADS-DDS makes its final decision.
