DOH COMMISSIONER CUTS RIBBON ON NEW UNITS AT NEW HORIZON VILLAGE IN FARMINGTON

 

 

FARMINGTON, CT - Connecticut Department of Housing Commissioner Seila Mosquera-Bruno, State Rep. Mike Demicco and other officials participated today in the ribbon cutting for 22 new units of supportive housing at New Horizons Village in Farmington.

 

New Horizons, Inc. (NHV), the Town of Farmington, and DOH partnered to stabilize, modernize, and implement energy-efficient upgrades to existing affordable housing residences. The project involved the creation and construction of 22 new, state-of-the-art, one-bedroom units. The addition of those 22 units positively impacts the lives of 44 residents who can now live independently while receiving supportive care services. 

 

DOH provided more than $5 million in funding to support the project.

 

“We are so proud to have been part of this incredible project that will significantly improve the lives of people with disabilities who can now live in these units,” said Commissioner Mosquera-Bruno.

 

The Council of State Community Development Agencies (COSCDA) recently awarded this project with a Sterling Achievement Award. This award recognizes state programs that have demonstrated, during a sustained period, positive results in improving the lives of lower-income persons in the following program areas:

  • Community Development/Economic Development
  • Housing Assistance
  • Homelessness Assistance/Prevention
  • Disaster Recovery

NHV provides affordable ADA-compliant housing with added support services to 101 adults with physical disabilities. The individuals living in the Village have a wide range of physical disabilities including Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, spinal cord injuries as well as other clinically diagnosed disabilities of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information between the brain and body.  Most tenants rely on motorized wheelchairs for mobility; therefore, having access to quality accessible housing is absolutely vital.

 

The Connecticut Department of Housing continues to place high importance on supporting initiatives that enhance accessible housing across the state housing portfolio. This project is an example of a development that has improved the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. It will also allow NHV to sustain themselves for decades to come.
