Crane License Application Path

License Types:

  • R-9 Limited Hoist, Cranes, and Lifts Contractor
  • R-10 Limited Hoist, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson

Please attach the following documents to your application that are required to process and expedite your application. Applications submitted without the required documents will be returned as incomplete, which will delay the finalization of your application.  

CT Residents Applying for an R-9 Contractor’s License:

  • Submit a copy of your current CT Journeyperson’s license and the date first issued.

CT Residents Applying for an R-10 Journeyperson’s License:

  • Submit a copy of your current CT Department of Consumer Protection Trainee Program Registration along with your original certificate of completion of the trainee program as issued by the CT Department of Consumer Protection.
  • If you were never registered with the CT Department of Consumer Protection into the trainee program, please provide notarized letters from your employers explaining the dates and duties that you had with that employer. Provide proof of schooling (related instruction) as per the below chart. DO NOT submit or include any W-2s, 1099s, or tax returns.

Out of State Residents Applying for an R-9 Contractor’s License:

Applicants holding “Out of State” Hoist, Cranes, and Lifts Contractor License(s) shall:

  • Submit a copy of each out of state hoist, cranes, and lifts contractor’s license that you currently have. Applicants holding “Out of State” Hoist, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson’s License(s) applying for Hoist, Cranes, and Lifts Contractor (R-9) or Journeyperson (R-10) shall:

  • Submit a copy of each out of state hoist, cranes, and lifts journeyperson’s license that you currently have.
    • Include a notarized/certified letter from each state indicating that you are in good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued.
    • If you hold licenses in multiple states, provide proof of at least one of those states' requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the chart below.
    • Provide proof of business entity as a hoist, cranes, and lifts contractor in at least one of the states that you currently hold a contractor’s license. Submit a copy of your certificate of registration with State and Federal agencies inclusive of FEIN number.
    • Include a notarized/certified letter from each state indicating that you are in good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued.
    • If you hold licenses in multiple states, provide proof of at least one of those states' requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the chart below.
    • If you were registered in a Department of Labor (or other certifying government agency) apprenticeship program in another State, please provide the certificate of completion from that state, and notarized letters from your employers explaining the dates and duties and total hours worked that you had with those employers to comply with the chart below.
    • If you were never registered with an approved apprenticeship program, please provide notarized letters from your employers explaining the dates and duties and total hours that you have with that employer. Provide proof of schooling (related instruction) inclusive of all transcripts and certificates of completion as per the following chart. DO NOT submit or include any W-2s, 1099s, or tax returns.

      * For related instruction the applicant must submit proof of completion of the OSHA 30 Course, OSHA Lockout/Tagout Training, and a trade specific course or courses totaling not less than 40 hours.     Special Notes

    1. For applicants providing proof of experience and training documentation from other countries, all documents must be submitted and translated into the English language for consideration.
    2. The Connecticut R-10 Trainee Program Schedule of Work Experience requires a minimum of 2000 hours on the job training. In all cases the trainee is to receive sufficient experience to become fully competent and use good workmanship in the trade. The following outline serves as a suggested guide:
    • Crane types and service classifications
    • General inspection requirements
    • General Crane safety and housekeeping
    • Hazards / shutdown conditions
    • Runways, wheels, and brakes
    • Crane structure and electrical systems
    • Drive machinery and hoist equipment Training must include the following:
  • A working knowledge of ANSI/ASME Standard B30
  • Electrical theory, codes, and Safety
  •  

    1. Applicants who did not complete a registered trainee program should be prepared to demonstrate through their work history and education that their experience demonstrates equivalency with the above suggested guide. Additionally, the content of the required 40-hour trade specific course should be related to one or more of the suggested areas listed above.
