NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY STUDENT CONTEST

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill has announced that September 24, 2013 has been declared National Voter Registration Day. In conjunction with National Voter Registration Day, The Secretary of the State, the State Department of Education and the Registrars of Voters Association of Connecticut have announced the launch of a voter registration contest for high schools to register new voters in advance of the 2013 elections.

The team who registers the greatest number of new voters will enjoy an "AMA" (ask me anything) session with Secretary of the State Denise Merrill and United States Senator Richard Blumenthal at a time to be determined based on scheduling availability. The newly registered voters may be eligible high school students or members of the general public residing in any town.

This project offers an opportunity for students to learn about who is eligible to register to vote, the voting process, and the historic struggles to expand democracy in our country as well as current events. The project also offers a learning opportunity through community service.

Submissions are to be sent to the Secretary of the State and must be postmarked no later than October 31, 2013.

RULES:

  • There shall be only one team per school. Although participants may include multiple classes, clubs, etc.
  • Voter registration submissions may include people registering from any town, not just where the school is located.
  • The original copy of the completed voter registration form must be received by the Registrar of Voters of the town where the voter resides no later than October 22, 2013.
  • Copies of voter registration forms should be kept by the team, their teacher or counselor. These shall constitute your submission in the contest. We suggest you make copies as you receive the enrollment forms, and then immediately forward the completed voter registration forms to the Registrar of Voters in the voter’s town of residence. This will reduce the opportunity to lose forms or miss the submission deadlines.
  • Due to voter registration forms containing personal information, it is suggested that a teacher/counselor collect them from participating students and be responsible for keeping the copies and forwarding of the originals.
