Influenza (flu) - People of any age can get influenza. Most people are ill with influenza for only a few days, but some get much sicker and may need to be hospitalized. West Nile Virus - (WNV) is a potentially serious illness. Experts believe WNV is established as a seasonal epidemic in North America that flares up in the summer and continues into the fall. Lyme Disease - Lyme disease was first recognized in Lyme, Connecticut in 1977 as Lyme arthritis. The bacteria are spread by the bite of an infected tick, Ixodes scapularis, commonly known as the deer tick. The tick is about the size of a poppy seed or the period at the end of this sentence when in its nymphal (immature) stage. Asthma - People with asthma have sensitive airways that may react to things like smoke, dust, and pollen.  When this occurs the lining of the airways become swollen or inflamed, thick mucus starts to line the airways.
