Your employer can share certain information about you without your permission, such as verifying the dates of your employment, your job title or position and your salary. All other personally identifiable information can only be disclosed with your permission, unless it falls under one of the six exceptions to the rule. An example of an exception would be if your personnel file is needed by a federal agency or in a medical emergency.

If you use a former employer as a reference, they can share information regarding your work performance from your personnel file, as well as their good faith observations and impressions.
