Armed School Security Guard Training

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT

TUITION COST:    $75.00 PER ATTENDEE

Armed School Security Personnel: Required Training

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection’s, Police Officer Standards and Training Council, Field Services Training Division, is presenting the training of armed school security personnel as required by Public Act 13-188.

The Recertification Training will be will be a ONE day, (6) contact hour session and has been scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2020. Additionally, NEW HIRES will have to attend a second consecutive day of training on, Tuesday August 18, 2020. Both training session will be held at New Britain High School located at 110 Mill St. New Britain, CT from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This seminar is required under Public Act 13-188.  This Act requires that armed security personnel in a public school, other than a sworn member of an organized local police department, be a qualified, retired in good standing, law enforcement officer certified by the Police Officer Standards and Training Council, or the Division of State Police within the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.  Such personnel will receive annual training.

NOTES:

  1. ALL CURRENTLY EMPLOYED ARMED SCHOOL SECURITY PERSONNEL ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS TRAINING
  2. ONLY PERSONNEL EMPLOYED AS AN ARMED SCHOOL SECURITY GUARD BY A BOARD OF EDUCATION OR A MUNICIPALITY/TOWN MAY ATTEND THIS TRAINING

Topics to be covered include:

Day 1

  • Current Drug Trends (Agent Sylvestre)
  • School Based “Policing” and Relevant Juvenile Laws (Captain Peterson)
  • General School Security Operations, Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Mandated Reporting (CIRMA – Joey Barbera)

Day 2

  • Critical Incident Management and First Responder Response (Stankye)
  • Communicating successfully with youth (Cummings – CSP)
  • Best practices and current trends (Jewiss – CSP)

Each respective Board of Education/Municipality will be billed by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection at the conclusion of this training.

Tuition for this course is $75.00 per attendee. For this course, the uniform dress code for POSTC In-Service Training (POSTC General Notice 90-03) will be in effect. The dress code requires business attire (collared shirt, no jeans, no open toed shoes).
