GOV. MALLOY URGES CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS
TO FULLY FUND SUB PROGRAM
(Hartford, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy sent letters today to the Chairs and the Ranking Members of Congress' Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to request the full funding of two Virginia Class submarines slated to be built by Electric Boat.
"This funding is critical to protect our national security interests as well as the jobs related to Connecticut's defense industry," said Governor Malloy. "This is a strategic investment that would boost Connecticut's manufacturing base, take advantage of our highly skilled and specially-trained workforce, as well as provide our troops with the most modern, technologically-advanced defense systems available. This is a win-win for the state and the country."
The 2011 Department of Defense budget authorized by Congress contained $3.44 billion to build two subs per year, plus an additional $1.69 billion in funding for future subs. However, the Continuing Resolution, issued in the absence of a budget, provides only $1.97 billion, enough funding for only one sub.
Governor Malloy's letters, sent to Chairmen Daniel Inouye and Bill Young and Ranking Members Thad Cochran and Norm Dicks, requested that the full funding of $3.44 billion be authorized in either the Department of Defense budget or in a year-long Continuing Resolution.
The Virginia Class fleet are attack class subs replacing the aging Los Angeles Class subs being retired by the military.
