(What to do after the expiration of your certification)
 
If the certification is not renewed within 90 days after the expiration date, the certification will become void and or expire and as a result the applicant can no longer practice as an EMS provider unless the certification is reinstated.  Any person certified as an EMR whose certification has expired may apply for reinstatement of such certification as follows:
  • If such certification expired one year or less from the date of application for reinstatement, such person shall complete an approved refresher course with a minimum of 18 hours, or
  • If such certification expired more than one year but less than three years from the date of application for reinstatement, such person shall complete an approved refresher course with a minimum of 18 hours and the written and practical examinations required for initial certification; or 
  • If such certification expired three or more years from the date of application for reinstatement, such person shall complete a full initial course with a minimum of 60 hours and the written and practical examinations required for initial certification.
Documentation Requirements
  • A completed application for EMR reinstatement, and, in addition, applicants must complete one of the following requirements:
  • EMR Recertification Program Completion Form verifying completion of an approved refresher course, directly from your instructor if such certification expired less than a year from the date of expiration of the certification.
  • EMR Recertification Program Completion Form verifying completion of an approved refresher course, directly from your instructor if such certification expired for one year but less than three years from the date of expiration of the certification.
  • EMR Training Program Completion Form verifying completion of an approved initial course, directly from your instructor if such certification expired more than three years from the date of expiration of the certification .  This is not applicable to military soldiers whose certification recently expired while on active duty.
  • EMR Recertification Program Completion Form verifying completion of an approved refresher course, directly from your instructor if such certification expired while on active duty.  Please note:  an approved refresher course must be completed for a period not to exceed one year from the date of discharge.  Copies of discharged papers (DD214) must accompany the application for reinstatement of the EMS certification.
