GOV. MALLOY ANNOUNCES NEW HAVEN LINE SET ALL-TIME RIDERSHIP RECORD
Over 40.5 Million Passenger Trips Taken on New Haven Line Last Year
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the New Haven commuter rail line saw ridership grow during 2016 with a total of 40.5 million passenger trips during the year – surpassing last year’s total by approximately 20,000 and setting an all-time record, according to newly released data from Metro-North Railroad. The New Haven Line remains the busiest commuter rail line in America.
“Our future economic growth depends on the vibrancy and vitality of an efficient transportation system that attracts workers and businesses and moves goods and services as efficiently as possible,” Governor Malloy said. “For too long, our state did not make the needed investments to keep up with our transportation needs, and now we are making the long overdue steps to make our bold vision of a modernized transportation system into a reality. The New Haven Line is a critical component of Connecticut’s economic engine, and its growing use signals the need to provide our state’s residents with a best-in-class transportation system.”
Over the last several years, the State of Connecticut made a number of investments into improving the New Haven Line, most notably putting into service 405 new, state-of-the-art M-8 rail cars, in addition to a number of other investments, such as new maintenance facilities, new bridges and new overhead power lines. In November, Governor Malloy announced that the state is purchasing an additional 60 M-8 rail cars to add to the fleet.
“Our investments in our rail system are clearly paying off,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner James Redeker said. “Our customers consistently tell us how happy they are with the new and more efficient and reliable M-8s.”
In summary, overall line ridership was up in 2016, with the increase being driven by ridership on the inner portion of the line (up by 1.8%). Outer New Haven ridership was essentially flat (actually down by 0.2%). December 2016 ridership was down from December 2015 by 1.5%, which is attributable to the December 1 Connecticut fare increase.
Overall New Haven Line ridership increased in 2016 by 20,800 rides, or 0.1%, over 2015, setting another ridership record for the New Haven Line in 2016. The so-called “inner portion” of the New Haven Line – between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal – had ridership growth of 1.8 percent; commuter trips were up 2.4 percent and discretionary travel was up 0.8 percent. The “outer portion” – between Stamford and New Haven – was essentially flat (-0.2%), with a 0.6 percent decline in commuter trips and a 0.2 percent growth for non-commuters.
The Danbury Branch saw a 0.5 percent increase over 2015, while Waterbury Branch ridership declined by 1.6 percent. The New Canaan Branch had a decline of 0.6 percent in total ridership in 2016.
The New Haven Line is owned by the State of Connecticut and is operated by Metro-North Railroad under contract to the state Department of Transportation.
