2022 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Information

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Atlantic Flyway wild migratory waterfowl (including CT wild waterfowl) and commercial and backyard poultry flocks along the east coast. To date, no Connecticut backyard or commercial flock has been confirmed as affected.

HPAI is highly contagious among domestic poultry and has a mortality rate among poultry approaching 100%. There is no effective treatment or vaccine for HPAI in poultry.
Action steps for backyard flocks include:
– Protect flocks from coming into contact with wild or migratory birds, bring your birds inside
– Restricting access to your property and your flock
– Clean and disinfect your clothes, shoes, equipment, and hands
– Don't haul disease home if you have been near other birds or bird owners
– Don't risk disease from your neighbor (do not borrow equipment and poultry supplies from other bird owners)
– Know the warning signs
– Report sick birds
