➤ Learner’s Permit Knowledge Testing is being done by appointment only at the DMV’s Cheshire (Wednesday – Friday) and Wethersfield (Tuesday – Friday) locations. All appointments will be confirmed or canceled by email. Be sure to check your email prior to heading to the DMV.

The DMV’s staff is working diligently to reduce its backlog and to provide critical services to essential businesses. Transactions are being completed as quickly as possible, in the order in which they are received. The average turnaround time is approximately 20 business days. The DMV appreciates the public’s patience as it navigates through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Definition of a Commercial Motor Vehicle

Effective January 01, 2019 there will be a federal criminal history background check fee increase from $12.00 to $13.25 for each Public Service Endorsement applicant.    
This fee will be in addition to the $75.00 fee for the State criminal background check for each Public Service Endorsement applicant.


A commercial motor vehicle can be defined as: 

  • Vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds
  • Vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver
  • Vehicle designed to transport 11 or more passengers, including the driver, and used to transport students under the age twenty-one years of age to and from school
  • Any vehicle transporting hazardous materials which is required to be placarded.
