About the State Historic Preservation Office
Overview
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) administers a range of federal and state programs that identify, register and protect the buildings, sites, structures, districts and objects that comprise Connecticut's cultural heritage. It seeks new opportunities for collaboration on restoration and community revitalization.
Our Initiatives
- Shared Stewardship: 2018-2023, a 5-year state historic preservation planning document
- Grants, including funding for historic preservation, basic operational support for nonprofits, survey and planning grants, and the Certified Local Government program
- Tax credits for historic preservation and rehabilitation
- Historic Resources, including guidance to qualify for National and State Registers of Historic Places, a Statewide Historic Resource Inventory, Municipal Historic District & Property Designations, and commemorative plaques
- Museums, including the Eric Sloane Museum & Kent Iron Furnace in Kent, the Henry Whitfield State Museum in Guilford, Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine in East Granby, and the Prudence Crandall Museum in Canterbury
- Environmental Review, to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations that affect historic preservation/rehabilitation projects
- Archaeological Assistance, including permits and information on archaeological preserves
